Do you like to sew? Do you know people who do?
Then we ask that you join us in a venture new to MPC. Named “Little Dresses for Africa”, it is a program that provides not only dresses, but pants for boys, tote bags, and hats for babies. Many girls in Africa do not have adequate clothing which increases the odds that they will become victims of rape and incest. Older girls are unable to attend school a week out of each month during their menstrual cycle due to lack of supplies. Many are forced to drop out, resulting in them having limited skills and being unable to provide for their own needs, continuing the poverty cycle.
Currently, a small group from MPC uses the resources of Fox Valley Technical College which reserves their sewing room at Lakeland College in Neenah on a bimonthly basis for us to sew these items for Africa. It began as a volunteer program for some of us who take sewing lessons at FVTC, to apply our skills to a worthy cause. On alternate months, we have gone to local sewing stores that have room, which is less dependable. We are expanding the current group to include new volunteers from within our congregation, as well as outside of our walls. While we will continue to meet at Lakeland College six times per year, we have added MPC as the new site to meet every other month. (Beginning in February)
WHO CAN JOIN?
We welcome anyone who likes to be a part of the process. Experience not needed. We will teach you and in addition to sewing things together, we need people to put together kits, cut fabric, iron fabric, sort projects, etc. We are an all-inclusive group who likes to do for others and have fun.
DO WE HAVE RESOURCES?
Thanks to a grant from the MPC mission committee and some generous donors, we have two serger sewing machines (with expert training included), fabric, scissors, bias seam tape, rotary cutter and blades, ruler and cutting mat, ironing boards, irons and basic notions. So, we have enough to get started, but will gladly welcome any fabric, elastic, and double wide ½ inch bias tape #206 from anyone.
WHEN DO WE START?
Our first meeting at Lakeland College in Neenah at 2320 Industrial Drive, will be on Tuesday, January 15 from 10:00-4:00. Please use the front entrance. If you can’t stay for the entire day but can come for a smaller length of time, you are welcome to do that. Sewing machines will be available for up to 25 people.
February’s sewing day will be held at MPC on Tuesday, February 19th, from 10-4. Bring your own machine. Everything else will be available.
